Donald Derby is a dedicated veteran, leader, and community volunteer whose life has been defined by service to his country, his fellow veterans, and his community.

A graduate of Eaton Rapids High School, Don answered the call to serve immediately after graduation by joining the United States Army. Following Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky. During his active-duty service, Don’s unit deployed in support of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. During that deployment, he earned the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Southwest Asia Service Medal. He continued serving on active duty until 1993.

Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Don continued his military career by joining the Army National Guard, serving with the 238th Aviation. His commitment to service continued for another three decades, including deployments to Balad, Iraq, in 2004–2005 and Afghanistan in 2011–2012 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, where he earned the Afghanistan Campaign Medal.

After a distinguished 33-year military career, Don retired from the Army National Guard in 2023 as a Sergeant First Class (E-7). During his military career, he served in a variety of roles and responsibilities, finishing his service as a Culinary Food Specialist. Throughout his career, Don demonstrated the leadership, dedication, and commitment to taking care of those who served alongside him.

Don’s commitment to service did not end with his military retirement. He has been a member of VFW Maple City Post #2406 since 2010 and continues to serve veterans and the community through his involvement with the Post. In 2026, he was elected Senior Vice Commander and is a Bronze Legacy Life Member.

Don is also a proud member of the VFW Maple City Post #2406 Honor Guard, where he participates in funeral services honoring deceased veterans. Through the Honor Guard, he helps ensure that fellow veterans receive the respect, dignity, and final tribute they have earned through their service to our country.

As Senior Vice Commander, Don works alongside fellow members to support veterans, strengthen the Post, participate in community activities, and uphold the traditions and values of the VFW. He believes that serving veterans is a responsibility that continues long after military service ends.

Don and his wife, Lynn, proudly support VFW Maple City Post #2406 through their time and involvement in various volunteer activities. Lynn is also a member of the VFW Auxiliary, making their commitment to the Post and its mission a shared family effort.

After more than three decades of military service, Don continues to answer the call to serve. His lifelong dedication to duty, leadership, camaraderie, and service is reflected not only in his military career, but also in his continued commitment to honoring and supporting veterans through VFW Maple City Post #2406.
